San Diego Zoo FEB Cover Replacement

FFI was selected to design and supply an FRP cover to replace an existing peaked steel roof on a Fluid Equalization Basin at the San Diego Zoo. The peaked steel roof suffered from severe corrosion, causing it to be potentially unsafe, as well as an eyesore. FFI's design utilized an all-FRP structure, with 316 stainless steel hardware for maximum corrosion resistance. Structurally, the cover was designed to support all environmental and personnel loads with substantial safety factors.

Blind flanges were installed in the cover panels to allow easy integration with an odor control system in the future. Access hatches were installed to allow easy access for equipment maintenance and tank inspection.

To prevent degradation from UV exposure, all FRP materials used in the construction contained UV inhibitors. On the surface of the cover, a highly UV-resistant, non-skid surface coating was used. Since the cover is directly below an observation deck, the surface coating of the cover was matched to the safari tan color used throughout the zoo.
